Iconic Commander’s Palace Operates Lean and Mean

Iconic Commander’s Palace Operates Lean and Mean

A true icon of New Orleans dining, Commander’s Palace has been setting the standard for exceptional Creole cuisine and hospitality since 1880. Nestled in the heart of the Garden District, the restaurant has earned national recognition for its innovative dishes, impeccable service, and prestigious accolades, including a James Beard Award for Best Chef in the South. As a pillar of the city’s vibrant culinary scene, Commander’s has continuously evolved to meet the demands of a growing business. However, as technology advanced, the restaurant faced a challenge: an outdated accounting system that was inefficient and unable to support modern operations. Determined to uphold their legacy while improving back-office efficiency, they sought a restaurant-specific solution.

Challenge

As a historic and high-volume restaurant, Commander’s Palace needed a modern accounting system to keep up with operational demands. However, their outdated AS/400 accounting system was outdated and unable to support the restaurant’s growing needs. Without a seamless way to manage financial data, payroll, and back-office tasks, they faced significant operational challenges, including:

  • Outdated technology: The AS/400 system was not Y2K-compliant and lacked the features needed for modern accounting and reporting.
  • Paper-heavy operations: The reliance on physical invoices and paper records created storage challenges and inefficiencies when pulling old invoices.
  • Inefficient payroll processing: Payroll was outsourced to ADP, requiring extra steps that increased costs and slowed down operations.

To maintain their legendary service, Commander’s Palace needed a restaurant-specific solution that could streamline their financial and back-office operations.

Solution

After evaluating multiple accounting software solutions, Commander’s Palace chose Restaurant365 because it was purposefully designed for the restaurant industry. Restaurant365’s Accounting solution seamlessly integrated with their point-of-sale (POS) system, eliminating the need for manual data entry and allowing for real-time sales tracking. The cloud-based platform also streamlined their back-office operations by digitizing invoices, reducing paper waste, and making financial records easily accessible.

In addition to improving accounting processes, Commander’s Palace made payroll improvements by switching from ADP to Restaurant365’s Payroll & HR solution. Prior to the switch, Commander’s collected payroll information out of their POS system, reviewed it, and sent it to ADP. Because Restaurant365 integrates with their POS system, they can streamline Payroll with R365’s all-in-one platform. With the time saved, their team can focus more on delivering the exceptional dining experience they are known for.

Results

Since implementing Restaurant365, Commander’s Palace has significantly streamlined its daily accounting operations. With automatic POS integration, all sales data flows seamlessly into the system, eliminating the need for manual data entry and reducing the risk of errors. This automation has saved the accounting team countless hours each week, allowing them to focus on higher-value tasks instead of tedious data reconciliation.

In Restaurant365 we can drill down on virtually anything to quickly get the information we are looking for. This is a huge time saver in our daily operations.

The restaurant has also cut costs and improved efficiency by switching from ADP to Restaurant365 Payroll. Before the transition, payroll processing involved collecting data from the POS system, reviewing it, and sending it to ADP—only for ADP to issue checks. Now, Commander’s manages payroll in-house with Restaurant365, eliminating third-party fees while maintaining full control over the process.

We soon realized that these were the same tasks required to process payroll with Restaurant365; we were paying another company simply to print checks.

Additionally, the paperless invoice scanning feature has revolutionized the way financial documents are stored and accessed. Previously, the team spent significant time and money on paper, filing, and storage. Now invoices can be scanned, stored digitally, and retrieved instantly from any location. This shift has improved accessibility, reduced physical storage needs, and created a more efficient workflow.

By leveraging Restaurant365’s all-in-one restaurant management solution, Commander’s Palace has modernized its back-office operations while maintaining the rich traditions that have made it a New Orleans institution for more than a century.

Conclusion

With Restaurant365, Commander’s Palace has transformed its back-office operations, improving efficiency, reducing costs, and eliminating outdated processes. By streamlining accounting, payroll, and data management, the restaurant can focus on what it does best: delivering a distinctive Louisiana dining experience. As Commander’s Palace continues its legacy as a New Orleans icon, Restaurant365 remains a trusted partner, ensuring smooth operations for years to come.
